Kickoff Northern-Greece Campaign 2024

Summer is nearing it’s end and that means preparations for our Northern Greece campaign are in full swing. As in previous years, we are once again supporting our partner organisations in and around Thessaloniki, although their work has changed compared to previous years.

Today, Thessaloniki is no longer just a stop on the Balkan route to the northern countries of Europe, but northern Greece itself has become a bureaucratic waiting centre. As we have learned from our partner organisations, they are increasingly having to look after people who have already received positive asylum decisions but are still without papers. In this situation, the people concerned fall through all the cracks. On the one hand, they are prohibited from working without papers, while on the other hand, with a positive asylum decision, they are not even entitled to the inadequate care provided by the Greek authorities.

Our partner organisations Wave Thessaloniki, Equal Legal Aid, IHA, Irida Women’s Center and now Med’EqualiTeam are doing their very best to support the local people in this precarious situation. And while our partners for example Northern Lights Aid and their Community Centre in Kavala can provide a lot of support, they cannot replace the medical care that is simply no longer provided by the state.

And it's not just the situation outside the refugee camps, the situation inside also remains precarious. Refugees are stuck here for months, waiting for their applications, without sufficient supplies of fresh clothing and hygiene articles, barely edible, sometimes even mouldy food and without running hot water.

We are hoping for your support! Every donation helps our partner organisations to alleviate the suffering that is condoned or even directly caused by state authorities in Greece and the EU.
